History... the small beginnings

I first started lettering at the age of 14,

lettering nylon shirts with marker pens and designing biker patches.

It was my father who suggested that I would make a good signwriter

and told me that my grandfather, on my mothers side, had been a signwriter in Barmouth, North Wales.

I had never heard of the word "signwriter" until then, so I did some research and found this was what I wanted to do as a career.

I left school at the age of 16 in 1976, my destiny was to work at Hawes Signs, in Gray Street,

Northampton, a position that my career officer had found for me.

For the first six months I worked in the acrylic department,

after which I was put to learn the trade with some real craftsmen:-

Gordon Hamilton-Grey, Russ Thomas and John Lawrence.

It was John who took me under his wing and I spent many hours practising in my spare time in the evenings.

I became competent in different styles of lettering and experimented with colour.

That was thirty-five years ago.

I am still signwriting today and I am still enjoying it as much as I have always done.

I can create a personalised sign for your requirement. Contact me now for more information.
